Chennakesava Temple or Somnathpur Keshava Temple

Chennakesava Temple or Somnathpur Keshava Temple
This is a temple from the Hoysala empire and stands magnificently in Belur on the route to Chikmagalur. It is a 12th century temple and legends tell it took almost 103 years to finish. It was repaired and rebuilt over the years after each war. The construction of the temple was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE and was completed after his death. It has withstood time gracefully and looks breathtakingly beautiful.
The rich work of the Hoysala artisans is something to be admired. Each sculpture is crafted with perfection and the detailing is subtle. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the main deity cannot be photographed. Rest of the areas can be photographed.
The temple is built of soapstone and is built on a raised platform. The intricate carving and sculpting depicts stories from epics, mythological events, battles and much more. The sculpture of some mythological creatures will leave you astounded..
There are guides available who can explain the whole story behind the temple and inscriptions. But instead of taking the guided tour we explored on our own and had an awesome time clicking photographs. Rather than seeing it as a temple it is better to see it as an architectural marvel crafted in a period of time when machinery or technology were unknown. The hard-work of the craftsmen has paid off and that's why this temple still stands in glory.
