Anayirangal Dam Or Elephant Lake- A retreat for animals

We came across this name on a board when we were out for a ride after visiting Mattupetty dam. This peculiar name tickled our curiosity and we decided to visit this place. We were doubtful at first as we did'nt read anything about this place but just drove on a whim. Anayirangal dam is a reservoir well-hidden by the surrounding tea plantations and thick forest.

After driving almost 20 km from Mattupetty dam we had to take a diversion onto a muddy road. There were a couple of tea plantation workers and on asking them they asked us to drive further. Road was bad and we were already half-hearted and ready to drop the plan. But something made us to drive just around the bend and behold what a sight. A vast body of water settled in midst of hilly forest and tea plantations.

It was breathtaking and we did'nt expect the view to be this spectacular. We were thankful for not giving up and driving to see whats on the other side. Because from the main road we will have no clue of such a beautiful place. There is a well maintained park setup with boating facilities constructed by the electricity board of Kerala. Only thing is they have to construct some good roads.

Scenic beauty of the ranges was awesome and there was a sense of peace and calm. Not being crowded it gives you time and space to reconcile with nature. So when you visit this place don't rush yourself just sit back and relax for some time. If you are lucky enough you can spot herd of elephants, deer coming down to the lake for a drink or a bath. That's how this place got this peculiar name.

This reservoir is the major water source for elephants and other animals. If are loaded with DSLR camera then you can get some nice shots of these animals. The backdrop of the dam is amazing so better make good use of it when you are here.

When to Visit

Park is open from 8 am to 5 pm on all days.

What to do

There is a small cafe where you can get soft drinks and snacks. Then there are boating facilities arranged. Speed boat is Rs 750 for 5 persons for 15 mins and the 20 seater family boat is Rs 1600 for half an hour.
